Distracted Brits in the South East risking it all at pedestrian level crossings, warns Network Rail
- Nearly half of people from the South East (47%) admit they’ve made a mistake, such as missing their train or locking themselves out of the house, while being distracted by their phone.
- Young people are among the most distracted with 87% of Gen Z and 70% of Millennials admitting to mistakes, compared to just 22% of Boomers.
- Over the past four years there have been 1,574 reported near miss incidents across the railway network involving pedestrians at level crossings.
- “The consequences of a split-second decision can be life-altering,” says Lucy Ruck who lost her leg in a level crossing incident.

Railway 200: Bookings now open for unique touring exhibition train coming to London Waterloo this July
- Bicentenary train, Inspiration, will visit London Waterloo station 18-19 July as one of 60 locations across Britain over 12 months, promoting rail innovation and careers.
- Inspiration will also visit Margate station (20-21 July) and the Bluebell Railway (23-29 July) across Network Rail’s Southern region.
- More than 200,000 visitors expected. Tickets now available to book for visits from 27 June to 1 October.

A lick of paint goes a long way: Network Rail Southern region prepares the railway for hot weather
- Approximately 1,500 litres of white paint - the equivalent of 30,000 square metres - will be applied to sections of the rail network to help keep passengers moving in very hot weather.
- Last year across the South of England, buckled rails due to hot weather caused 64 days (92,015 minutes) of delays for passengers.
- Two locations in Network Rail’s Southern region ranked in the top three nationally for heat-related incidents that affected the greatest number of trains.
