A major programme of improvements is gathering pace at stations across the west of England, making the railway more accessible for passengers and local communities.

As temperatures drop, the evenings draw in and millions of leaves fall across the Great Western route, Network Rail’s specialist ‘leaf-busting’ trains are hard at work tackling one of the railway’s biggest seasonal challenges.

Customers are being asked to check before they travel in Devon and Cornwall on Friday as Storm Austen brings high winds to the South West.

• Passengers travelling between London Paddington and the Thames Valley are set to benefit from a £27.8 million upgrade to one of the busiest and most important junctions on the Great Western Main Line

• Initial closure of lines to and from London Paddington on 28 and 29 November will be followed by the main phase of work between Christmas Day and Sunday 3 January (inclusive)

• Customers will still be able to get to where they need to go, with alternative routes available, but journeys may take longer than usual.

• More than 1,300 trespass incidents were recorded across Network Rail’s Great Western route in 2025/26
• Combined, these incidents caused almost 130,000 minutes of delays, equivalent to around 90 days

Rail services will operate again between Reading and Swindon on Thursday 24 September as engineers from gas distribution company SGN have successfully repaired a gas leak near railway land in the Didcot area.
