Network Rail has upgraded its Morpeth maintenance delivery unit (MDU) with a £3.7 million investment to strengthen support for the railway in North East England.

Significant strides have been made on an extensive £6 million package of rail upgrades being delivered by Network Rail in the Sunderland area.

Railway improvement work in Derbyshire and Staffordshire will affect passenger services over the next two weekends, with some journeys requiring a replacement bus.

Passengers are expected to benefit from improved punctuality and even more reliable journeys – with new platforms, enhanced signalling, and technology designed to spot potential overhead line issues among more than 60 initiatives set out in a joint plan to boost performance.

The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is showcasing some of the organisations from its 2025 Community Fund round, who have used their grants to improve local spaces and places.
