Direct passenger services between Cardiff and Edinburgh returned today (Monday 16 December), with a special event to mark the launch of CrossCountry’s new weekday offering.

Network Rail engineers will be busy carrying out a range of projects across the Wales & Borders route over Christmas – but the good news for passengers is that the work is scheduled to take place when the railway is closed.

Network Rail is urging level crossing users to be aware of the risk when crossing ahead of a timetable change that will see more trains running on the South Wales Main Line, as well as changes to the timings of services throughout the day.

Passengers are being reminded to prepare for a four-week period of railway upgrade work in and around Westbury station, that will improve performance of train services and ensure the continued safe and reliable running of the railway for years to come.

Passengers are urged to check before they travel between Machynlleth and Pwllheli next month, when Network Rail will be carrying out essential engineering work on the Cambrian Line.

For the next two weekends (23-25 November, 30 November-2 December), engineering work will be taking place as part Network Rail’s performance improvement plan – known as Project Brunel – which will mean a reduced train service is operating between London Paddington, Heathrow Airport and Reading. This work includes vital drainage upgrades for areas of the line that frequently flood, as well as replacing track and sleepers (which support the rails) that have come to the end of their useable life.
