Passengers and freight at the heart of new £44bn, five-year plan for our railway
Network Rail today published its £44bn, five-year plan (2024-29, Control Period 7 – CP7) for the railway in England and Wales that sees increased investment in tackling climate change, improving train performance from current levels, investing in things that matter most to passengers and freight users, and making our ‘green’ railway, even greener.

Transpennine Route Upgrade reveals plans to slash carbon emissions, generate thousands of jobs and deliver billions of pounds in social value in the North of England
The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) has today revealed its strategy to improve the lives of millions of people in the North by:
- Slashing railway carbon emissions, equivalent to taking 6 million cars off the road for an entire year
- Creating and safeguarding thousands of jobs for local people and providing tens of thousands of opportunities for new entrants to the industry and young people
- Delivering more than £4bn in social value and a further £4bn in wellbeing

Rail passengers urged to check before travelling as upgrade work takes place over early May bank holiday
- Majority of rail network will remain open over the bank holiday, though some journeys will be affected as Network Rail undertakes £73m investment in Britain’s railway
- Services to and from London Euston will be affected, with a reduced service operating on Saturday 29 and no trains to/from Milton Keynes on Sunday 30 April

Passengers in London urged to check before travelling as upgrade work takes place over early May bank holiday
- Network Rail is providing travel information for passengers across London over the forthcoming early May bank holiday weekend as upgrade work takes place on routes to, from and within the capital
- Euston will be most affected, with a reduced service operating on Saturday 29 and no trains to/from Milton Keynes on Sunday 30 April

Passengers reminded to plan ahead this Easter weekend as Network Rail undertakes £88m engineering programme
- Passengers reminded to plan journeys in advance over this bank holiday weekend as Network Rail carries out a programme of more than 600 projects to improve performance and reliability across Britain
- Majority of network will be open for business as usual, but journeys on some routes will be affected
- Euston station closed for four days- West Coast main line passengers advised to travel either side of bank holiday weekend on Thursday 6 April and Tuesday 11 April
- Oxford-Didcot line remains closed- train operators urging passengers to only travel if journeys are essential
