London partygoers urged to plan ahead this New Year’s Eve

Region & Route:
National

Network Rail is urging passengers travelling to and from London for New Year’s celebrations to plan their journeys ahead of time as trains and stations are likely to be busier than usual.

With a number of high-profile events taking place in the city, high visitor numbers are expected in capital. The Mayor of London's New Year's Eve Fireworks display is taking place once more, with tickets now completely sold out.

Passengers are urged to keep up to date with train services on the night by visiting National Rail Enquiries or checking with their train operator. Network Rail is advising passengers to know what time their last train home is, and to expect busier stations and services.

Travellers are also reminded that vital track renewal work at Bishopsgate Tunnel and work to improve passenger experience at London Liverpool Street means this station will remain closed on New Year’s Eve, with services resuming on Thursday, 2 January.

Greater Anglia services will be diverted via Stratford except Stansted Express which will terminate at Tottenham Hale. London Overground services will terminate at London Fields. Passengers should use Victoria line services from Walthamstow Central and Seven Sisters or local bus services to complete their journeys during this closure.

Helen Hamlin, Network Rail’s director of system operations, said: “We want everyone celebrating New Year’s Eve in London to have a fantastic time, including being able to get home smoothly.

“We know that a lot of people will be travelling home after the festivities, and we’d urge them to plan their route ahead of time, including knowing what time their last train home is.

“Passengers can keep up to date with the latest travel information by visiting National Rail Enquiries or their train operator’s website.”

Claire Mann, Transport for London's Chief Operating Officer, said: "The majority of the TfL transport network will operate this New Year's Eve helping customers make the most of their evening in the capital.  Most TfL services will operate throughout the night into New Year's Day making it the easiest, safest and most affordable way to get around the city.  We do ask that customers check before they travel as some planned works are taking place.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
