Network Rail is giving passengers a behind-the-scenes look at the major upgrade of London’s Waterloo station, as work to deliver the £800 million Waterloo & South West Upgrade continues.

Network Rail has completed another £4.5 million slice of the £800 million Waterloo & South West Upgrade on time over Christmas, which will boost capacity at Waterloo by 30% by December 2018.

While most people were tucking into their turkey Christmas dinner, Network Rail’s orange army spent this Christmas renewing a railway bridge in Bramley, Hampshire, as part of its multimillion pound Christmas upgrade programme.

Network Rail and South West Trains have teamed up with St John Ambulance to ask passengers to stay safe near the railway, at an awareness day held at London Waterloo on Thursday, 22 December.

Network Rail is reminding passengers to the south and west of London to plan their journeys as early as possible this Christmas. This is ahead of a programme of upgrade work taking place on the country’s rail network over the Christmas period.

Passengers at Camberley station will soon benefit from longer trains as Network Rail’s work to extend the station’s platforms continues.

Maggie Eddy, a scheme project manager for Network Rail is asking passengers to check before they travel if they’re planning to use the trains this Christmas, as she’ll be joining hundreds of others in delivering £4.5 million of upgrades as part of the Waterloo & South West Upgrade over Christmas.

New figures released this morning (Tuesday, 6 January) by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) reveal that London Waterloo remains Britain’s busiest station with annual passenger numbers reaching over 99 million in one year, as Network Rail and South West Trains continue their work to boost capacity at the station by 30%.
