From St Helena in the South Atlantic to Vanuatu in the Pacific, Glasgow Central has welcomed visitors from across the Commonwealth during the opening days of Glasgow 2026. 

Millions of rail passengers are set to benefit from new technology designed to deliver clearer, real-time information during disruption, as the system launches on some of Scotland’s busiest rail routes for the first time.

Network Rail has bought a miniature replica of Glasgow’s Union Street corner, preserving a piece of the city’s history and bringing it to life for visitors on the popular Glasgow Central Tours.

Network Rail is set to begin a £1.3m project to renew a rail bridge over Westfield Road in Edinburgh, supporting future journeys to and from the capital.  

Rail passengers in Fife are being asked to plan ahead this October as Network Rail carries out a major programme of engineering to help prepare the railway for electrification. 

The new Balgray station in Barrhead is set to open weeks ahead of schedule, with final preparations now underway before it welcomes its first passengers. 

Network Rail Scotland has begun a £1.3 million project to upgrade a key railway bridge in Dunblane, helping to keep services running safely and reliably for years to come.

Network Rail will reopen the Union Street and Gordon Street entrances at Glasgow Central, bringing Scotland's busiest railway station fully back to normal ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
