Billion-pound plans to improve rail travel to and from London have progressed further with critical work taking place over the weekend to prepare for a digital future.

For nine days engineers on Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) have worked around the clock, bringing passengers closer to a fully accessible station.

Network Rail is urging road users in Newton Harcourt to allow extra time for their journey as major work to upgrade two railway bridges takes place.

Today (Friday, 23 June) is International Women in Engineering Day (IWED) and three female engineers are encouraging more women to consider a career in the rail industry.

Industry partners in the transformational East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP) have signed a £32.7million contract to upgrade the Class 700 Thameslink fleet to the latest specification of European Train Control System (ETCS). The five-year contract was signed by Cross London Trains, DfT, Govia Thameslink Railway, Network Rail and Siemens Mobility.

Network Rail have teamed up with the Leicestershire Craft Centre, as well as other community groups, to create and paint an art mural to prevent vandalism and trespass in South Wigston, near Leicester.  

Road users in West Langton, Leicestershire are being advised to plan ahead over the week of Monday 19 June until Friday 23 June.

Passengers travelling to and from London on the Midland Main Line are being urged to plan ahead this weekend as major upgrades get underway.
