Passengers are being advised not to travel with all trains currently stopped through Birmingham New Street station until further notice as Britain records its hottest day in history.

Network Rail and train operators have this evening upgraded their travel advice for services heading north out of London into the weather warning ‘red zone’ to ‘DO NOT TRAVEL’.

Rail leaders in the East Midlands are warning that passengers will not be able to travel for significant parts of the day tomorrow (Tuesday 19 July).  It’s in response to forecast temperatures for the Midland Main Line which are higher than the design limits for track and overhead line equipment.   Extra safety precautions are being put in place, particularly between Bedford and London.  The East Coast Main Line is also closed to rail services during Tuesday.

Network Rail will close the East Coast Main Line (ECML) for all locations between London King’s Cross and York and Leeds due to the extreme weather expected on Tuesday 19 July. Passengers are being warned not to travel.

Rail leaders in the East Midlands are advising passengers to only travel if absolutely necessary on Monday and Tuesday next week (18 and 19 July).

With temperatures set to soar across the country early next week, Scotland’s Railway is putting plans in place to manage the hot weather and keep passengers moving.
