Improvements to the railway between Rugeley Trent Valley and Walsall are progressing as planned as Network Rail engineers continue work to electrify the Chase line.

Damaged track is being taken away today from the site at Ely where a freight train derailed on Monday as engineers start extensive repair work to the damaged line. Wagons have been lifted off the track with a rail crane as part of a major recovery operation which was completed yesterday.

Network Rail’s helicopter and crew spend most of their time flying over the country’s 20,000 miles of railway, looking for potential faults with track and electrical equipment or alerting local team to trees brought down in high winds. This summer, the helicopter has also been helping keep the South East’s railway running smoothly by looking for trespassers and other criminals on the tracks.

The public are being warned that overhead power cables on the main Edinburgh-Glasgow line will be live for testing from Saturday, September 2.

Network Rail is looking for 11 new apprentices in Wales and the borders for its award-winning engineering apprenticeship scheme to start in March next year.
