Network Rail and RIBA Competitions have launched a competition seeking new design ideas for footbridges.

With the extreme hot weather predicted this week, Network Rail has activated its ‘extreme weather action teams’ (EWATs) across the country to ensure passengers are kept safe and our railway keeps running as reliably as possible.

Thousands of UK SMEs are set to benefit from revised contract terms as Network Rail takes an industry leading step to change the way major suppliers working on the railway pay their subcontractors.

Network Rail is inviting suppliers to bid for the next generation of track work contracts, the largest of its kind being undertaken for the upcoming funding period.

Network Rail has launched its new technology Supplier Qualification System (SQS), designed to improve market engagement, provide greater visibility of business opportunities and reduce the time it takes to award contracts.

Three Network Rail employees have today been honoured in the Queen’s birthday honours list:

• Ian Stevens, programme manager, MBE, for services to suicide prevention
• Scott Heath, project manager, BEM, for services to the LGBT community
• Mark Carne, chief executive, CBE, for services to the railway industry

Network Rail has today announced plans to tackle three significant environmental issues in the country’s biggest and busiest rail stations.

• Ban retailers from supplying plastic cutlery and cups in managed stations by the end of 2020
• Implement a coffee cup recycling scheme for managed stations by the end of 2020
• Expand the roll out of coffee ground recycling to all managed stations by the end of 2020
