Sunday 3 August 2025 marked a major step forward for rail travel in the North, as the first electric passenger train officially ran between York (Colton Junction) and Church Fenton.

A newly resurfaced canal towpath and upgraded footpath around Mirfield’s memorial garden has officially opened today, offering the local community a greener, easier, safer, and more accessible route to the station.

On Wednesday 30 July, TRU welcomed Mike Reader MP to multiple sites across the route to see firsthand the transformation being delivered by the multi-billion-pound railway programme. An MP for Northampton South, Mike Reader also currently serves as Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Infrastructure.

Passengers are advised of digital signalling work affecting journeys on the East Coast Main Line on the August bank holiday weekend.

Rail customers are being urged to check before they travel as three consecutive weekends of engineering work take place between Stalybridge, Huddersfield and Dewsbury, starting on Saturday 2 August.

Vital track renewal and drainage upgrades will be carried out next weekend – affecting rail journeys between Leicester and Peterborough.

The completion of Alfreton station’s £6.75 million accessibility upgrade was celebrated with an official opening event today (Wednesday 23 July).
