Motorists will have less time to wait at Oulton Broad North level crossing near Lowestoft after changes made by Network Rail.

Britain’s first sliding gate level crossing barriers are now operational in the North East after a recent upgrade as part of Network Rail’s Railway Upgrade Plan.

Two level crossings are being revamped as part of the Railway Upgrade Plan which will see a better, more reliable railway for passengers and businesses in Greater Lincolnshire.

It is ten years since the tragic deaths of Olivia Bazlinton, 14, and Charlotte Thompson, 13, at Elsenham level crossing in Essex – an event which led to a sea-change in Network Rail’s approach to level crossing safety and today Britain has the best level crossings safest record of any major railway in Europe. 

Plans to build a new section of railway to allow the UK’s first tram-trains to run in South Yorkshire have been approved by the Department for Transport.

A 140-year-old bridge in Nottinghamshire is set to be reconstructed as part of Network Rail’s Rail Upgrade Plan.
