Network Rail teams in York are giving up their Christmases to carry out essential work to upgrade the track north of York to make sure train services can continue running reliably for years to come.

Network Rail is carrying out work to upgrade Bainton level crossing in Helpston this weekend to improve reliability and make sure it remains fit for purpose for years to come.

Work to transform the arrival to York’s historic railway station has taken another step forward, as the council’s Executive agreed plans to progress the scheme.

Network Rail and train operators are warning passengers of severe disruption to rail services tonight and into the weekend as wind speeds of up to 100mph are forecast.

This week, teams from Network Rail will begin work to completely revamp and refurbish the footbridge at Cramlington railway station.

This weekend, Network Rail will work to upgrade Bainton Green level crossing in Helpston, Peterborough in a boost to reliability and safety.

• Improvements will bring a more modern reliable railway for passengers and reduce the impact of unplanned disruption
• Network Rail is taking the opportunity to make major progress when no train services are timetabled on Christmas Day or Boxing Day
• Reduced East Midlands Railway and Thameslink services from Monday 27 December until Tuesday 4 January – passengers encouraged to plan ahead

• Work will continue later this month to upgrade the track and signalling on London’s Northern City Line ready for it to be digitally signalled by 2023
• Trains between Finsbury Park and Moorgate will divert into London King’s Cross over next three weekends – passengers reminded to check their journey
• Work will also take place over Christmas, with changes to services from Monday 27 until Wednesday 29 December
• East Coast Digital Programme will boost reliability for passengers and reduce delays
