Passengers travelling through York station can look forward to smoother, more reliable journeys after Network Rail refreshed nearly three kilometres of track through the platforms.

Emergency engineering works are now under way on the West Coast Mainline near Carstairs, between Carlisle and Glasgow, to repair flood damage.

Nick Millington, Network Rail’s Wales and Borders interim route director has been awarded an MBE in the King’s New Year’s Honours List.

• Rail union strikes between 3-7 January will mean very limited trains for passengers
• Birmingham New Street will see nine trains per hour during RMT strikes on 3-4 and 6-7

Scotland’s Railway will be working hard to run as many trains as possible for customers during two 48-hour RMT strikes on January 3/4 and January 6/7.
