An application for permission to build a new section of rail that will allow European-style Tram Trains to run between Britain’s rail and tram network for the first time has been submitted to the Secretary of State for Transport.

Passengers are being advised to check before they travel on the West Coast main line this Easter as Network Rail continues its programme of investment and improvements.

Network Rail will be continuing its investment and upgrade of the railway in the north west over Easter – which will mean changes to train services in the city and surrounding area.

A footpath crossing of the railway near Petersfield in Hampshire has been temporarily closed  following a series of incidents.

People are continuing to risk their lives at Grays level crossing in Essex by jumping the barriers or walking on the tracks, Network Rail has said. 

Ongoing work as part of the electrification of the railway between Walsall and Rugeley Trent Valley will take place over Easter as Network Rail continues its investment in the West Midlands.

Network Rail will be tweeting images and updates live from Reading station over Easter as the ‘orange army’ completes its biggest package of improvement work on the Western route to date.

Michael Matheson MSP today (Friday, March 27) joined Network Rail and Scottish Canals to re-open the Forth and Clyde canal at the Falkirk Wheel following a six-month closure.
