Passengers and businesses in Bristol are set to benefit from an increase in train and freight services, reduced journey times and a better travelling experience after Network Rail announced today the doubling of the railway lines between the city’s two main stations.

Local residents are invited to find out more about the electrification of the railway through Bath city centre by attending the second in a series of monthly drop-in events.

Network Rail has today announced its preferred solution for tackling the problem of continual flooding at Cowley and Stafford bridges in Exeter. This solution involves the removal of three weirs close to the bridges to lower the water level in this part of the River Exe.

Today, Friday 17 October 2014, HRH The Princess Royal officially opened the newly redoubled railway line from Swindon to Kemble in a ceremony at Kemble station.

People across the Thames Valley, the West and South West of England can have their say on the future of the region’s rail network following the publication by Network Rail of the rail industry’s draft Western route study.

A Network Rail spokesperson, said: “We are sorry for the problems that have affected train services on the Great Western Main Line this week. Performance has been well below the standards passengers deserve and expect.
