Network Rail in Wales and Borders has announced its five-year spending proposals to improve the railway at a local level, benefitting as many passengers as possible.

• Proposed £2bn+ plan to maintain and improve the railway in the Western region between 2019 and 2024
• Plans include supporting an additional 140,000 more trains per year from 2019 and working ever more closely with operators to improve reliability across the route by more than 11%
• Target of 6% efficiency, creating potential savings of over £100m

A special Valentine’s Day event will take place at Paddington station on Wednesday, 14 February to celebrate improvements to Brunel’s iconic station, as well as the £7.5bn route modernisation that will transform journeys across the West, and provide thousands more seats to and from London Paddington.

Passenger journeys from Bristol will be transformed from next year with more frequent services to London, quicker journeys and more seats per train.

Network Rail is carrying out improvement work to the Cambrian Line, between Newtown and Aberystwyth, as part of its Railway Upgrade Plan. The £7.25m project will see 6km of track renewed over a period of 8 weeks.

Passengers are being urged to check before they travel ahead of essential modernisation work between Cardiff and Newport this February.
