Passengers travelling between Newport and Bristol and between Newport and Gloucester are advised to check before travelling this Christmas and New Year, as Network Rail engineers work around the clock to modernise the South Wales Main Line.

Passengers in the south west are being advised to check before they travel tomorrow morning with no services running through Dawlish and Teignmouth in Devon owing to expected extreme weather.

Network Rail has secured a budget of more than £2.4billion to provide a safer and more reliable railway for passengers travelling from London Paddington to the west.

Network Rail’s South West Rail Resilience Programme held its first community drop-in session last week (Tuesday 30 October) to update residents and the local community on ongoing work to improve the resilience of the railway between Dawlish and Teignmouth in Devon.

Shrewsbury residents and station users have been invited to a drop-in event to find out more about the second phase of upgrade work at the historic Shrewsbury station, which will begin in November 2018.

• Repairs to four breakwaters, which protect the coast from the force of waves, will begin in November to immediately improve protection for the Dawlish sea wall and the railway running along the coast
• The work is expected to take six months and community events will be held in Dawlish, Teignmouth and Holcombe in the coming weeks for local communities to find out more
