Passengers travelling through York station can look forward to smoother, more reliable journeys after Network Rail refreshed nearly three kilometres of track through the platforms.

• Rail passengers are being warned of severe disruption on 13, 14, 16 and 17 December as the RMT, TSSA and Unite stage strike action
• A special, reduced timetable is planned to run along the East Coast Main Line, with trains starting later and finishing much earlier than usual, between 7.30am and 6.30pm
• Passengers should expect disruption, plan ahead and only travel if it’s absolutely necessary

A ‘year of breakthrough delivery’ for the transformational East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP) has been marked with a visit by Rail Minister Huw Merriman to London King’s Cross to see the technology and meet the people involved with making it happen.

Teams from Network Rail will work round the clock this festive period to deliver vital track improvements in and around York railway station.

Major multi-million-pound repairs to the iconic Royal Border Bridge are being extended into 2023 to make the centuries-old structure strong and reliable for future generations to enjoy.

A huge investment to bring lifts to Royston station and make it more accessible for passengers is now under way.

Network Rail engineers have completed a £13.2m project to secure a railway embankment near Morpeth station on the East Coast Main Line, protecting the line for years to come. 

• Harlaxton Road in Grantham is officially one of the worst bridges in the country for bridge strikes, having been struck 17 times in 2021/22. 
• Across Britain, more than 1,800 bridges were hit in 2021/22, costing Network Rail almost £12 million in delay and cancellation fees. 
• Network Rail has launched a new animation as part of its ‘Wise Up, Size Up’ campaign, urging lorry drivers to know the height of their vehicle, look out for road signs and slow down when approaching a bridge.
