While much of the rail network will be open this Easter, engineers will be working in key locations to maintain, renew and improve the railway infrastructure to keep services running safety and reliably.

This Saturday marks one weeks to go until the start of critical railway upgrades between Staines and Windsor.

• Railway engineers uncover historic tunnels and rooms underneath Salisbury station
• Tunnels and rooms believed to have been previously used to store barrels of beer, eggs and support the operational running of the station
• Another entrance, in an unused building on Platform 1, has also been discovered with further investigations to follow.

Engineers will be working around-the-clock on the Inverclyde lines between Saturday (March 15) and Tuesday (March 18) to deliver more than £14m of investment in renewing vital infrastructure.

Network Rail has worked with the Railway Heritage Trust (RHT) to restore the site of a time capsule at Hambleton, near Selby.

Buses will be running in place of trains between Luton and Mill Hill Broadway on the Midland Main Line this weekend (15 and 16 March) as Network Rail continues work to improve reliability on the rail route.

Network Rail’s Air Operations team has been testing a powerful new camera system that combines high-resolution photography with laser surveys and near-infrared images to give engineers an incredible view of the network.
