40,000 students reached in rail safety campaign ahead of Fife electrification

A Network Rail safety campaign is helping keep young people safe around the railway, reaching around 40,000 students across 66 schools on the Haymarket to Dalmeny route. 

The initiative is part of the wider electrification of the railway in Fife, which includes the Haymarket to Dalmeny stretch. 

The £311m project, funded by the Scottish Government, will prepare the railway for the introduction of new battery-electric trains, helping make journeys faster, more comfortable and reliable for passengers. 

The electrified lines carry 25,000 volts of electricity, creating significant risks for anyone entering the railway environment.

The safety campaign is playing an important role in helping young people understand the dangers of trespassing and the importance of staying clear of railway infrastructure. 

Delivered in partnership with Learn Live, the programme is providing schools with online workshops and educational resources focused on railway safety. 

Additional programmes are planned for the coming months, including further educational resources and public awareness activity aimed at communities along the route. 

Paul Reilly, senior programme manager at Network Rail, said: “As we continue to deliver the Haymarket to Dalmeny phase of the wider Fife Electrification project, we're committed to making sure local communities have the information they need to stay safe around the railway. 

“Working with Learn Live will allow us to engage with around 40,000 students across 66 schools, helping to build awareness of railway safety through accessible and engaging educational content. 

“This is the first stage of a wider programme of safety engagement, and we look forward to continuing that work with schools, families and communities along the route.”
