Pedestrians are risking injury or death by taking shortcuts and climbing over fencing at Grays level crossing in Essex, Network Rail and Thurrock Council have warned.

Network Rail is seeking to recruit 18 young people from the east of England for its award-winning apprenticeship scheme, as it continues the largest investment into the railway since Victorian times.

Essential improvements to provide a better, more reliable railway for passengers between London and Norwich will take place over eight weekends from the end of January to the middle of March affecting services at Colchester, Witham, Chelmsford and Marks Tey.

Residents living alongside the East Coast Main Line through Cambridgeshire are invited to share their views as part of a second round of consultation into plans to close a number of level crossings.

Plans to make sure the railway in the east of England can continue to accommodate the huge growth in demand from passengers and freight over the next thirty years have been published by Network Rail – and members of the public are being encouraged to have their say on the proposals.

The railway line from London to Norwich is set to benefit from a major package of upgrades worth £170m next year, providing a better, more reliable railway for passengers.

Residents from Marsh Gibbon and Calvert will have the opportunity to give their views on how railway crossing safety can be improved in their area by attending a public consultation event on Wednesday 22 October.
