Work has started to provide passengers at Brentwood with step-free access between the station entrance and the platforms, making the railway more accessible for everyone.

The £2.7m project, which is part of the national Access for All programme, will include the installation of three new lifts making it easier for passengers to move around the station.

Richard Schofield, Network Rail route managing director, said: “The improvement works at Brentwood will make a big difference to passengers. Once completed, the station will be easier to use and more accessible for everyone. Those passengers with reduced mobility or travelling with small children or heavy luggage should reap the biggest benefits.”

Andrew Goodrum, Customer Service Director, Greater Anglia, said: "Brentwood is an important station on our Metro network and we're pleased that work to improve accessibility for passengers will shortly be underway. We will be working closely with our colleagues at Network Rail to help ensure that any inconvenience to our customers while the work takes place is kept to an absolute minimum."

Work is expected to be completed in June 2014.

The Access for All project is another improvement for rail passengers using Brentwood. In 2011, a National Station Improvement Programme (NSIP) scheme was completed upgrading customer facilities including the ticket office, booking hall and customer toilets. And earlier this year, Oyster PAYG was extended to Brentwood.

Notes to editors

Access for All is a £390m fund for station accessibility. Station selection and prioritisation is made by the DfT. To date, 98 stations in England, Wales and Scotland have been completed and received access improvements.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
