Network Rail teams will begin vital work next week on a £413,000 project to strengthen the embankment next to Sherburn in Elmet station.

The land behind platform 2 has become unstable over time, and the work is required to protect the embankment, which supports the platform.

From Monday 25 January, teams will install stone behind the platform, which will strengthen the land around it. The work will keep passengers in Sherburn in Elmet connected with York, as well as Hull and Sheffield, for years to come. Improvements will also be carried out to sections of the platform floor.

For this work to take place safely, teams will need to remove some of the plants and hedges on the embankment. All of this work will be carried out in line with the latest Government guidelines around COVID-19.

Network Rail has also provided people who live near the station with more information about the improvements.

There will be no disruption for passengers who have to travel, as the work is taking place overnight, Monday to Saturday, from Monday 25 January until Wednesday 17 March. During this time, the station will remain open as normal.

People should continue to follow the latest Government guidance and must stay at home except for limited reasons. If you need to travel, plan ahead to avoid busy times and routes on public transport.

Matt Rice, Route Director for Network Rail’s North and East route, said: “This project is essential so people in Sherburn in Elmet can continue to safely use the station, and services can continue running reliably, for generations to come.

“We’re taking this early action now to protect the embankment and avoid disruption for passengers and people in the community in future."

Tony Baxter, Regional Director at Northern said: “Our customers will be pleased to know their journeys will not be affected while this important improvement work is carried out.

“However, we strongly advise people to continue to follow the Government’s advice only travel if essential for work, or for other legally permitted reasons.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
