Interested in a career on the railway? We’re recruiting our next batch of future rail leaders through the Network Rail apprenticeship scheme. Applications are now open for a September 2019 start and will close when all places have been filled – so head over to our website today to make sure you don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity!

Network Rail apprentices receive three years of expert training, earn whilst they learn, and develop skills that are important not just for their future careers, but for life. This year, Network Rail’s Western route saw its highest intake of apprentices in many years, as a total of 32 people joined the scheme in March 2019, including a record number of women. Network Rail is a diverse organisation and people from all walks of life are encouraged to apply. There is no upper age limit, and applications are open to all those who will be 18 or older on 1 September 2019.

With the railway currently undergoing its biggest upgrade since it was built, it’s no surprise that people are joining the apprenticeship scheme to be part of a dynamic team, making a real difference.

Third-year apprentice Joseph Clewer said: “It’s been honestly one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done, and the satisfaction of going home knowing that you’ve done something worthwhile is incredible”.

Joseph is part of the track maintenance team in Reading and has future plans to become a track maintenance engineer, adding “I hope I would be able to go as far as to end up on the route management team one day!”

Our apprenticeship scheme can take you all the way to the top. Mark Langman, route managing director for Western route, started his career as an apprentice straight out of school in 1986 and urges anyone with an interest in the railway to consider applying to become a future apprentice.

“The Network Rail apprenticeship scheme is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a team where you make a difference every day, learning vital skills and making life-long friends. You’ll be taught by industry- leading experts and help to shape the railway of the future.

“I would encourage anyone with a passion and drive to make a difference to apply.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
