TRAIN PUNCTUALITY REACHES NEW RECORD HIGH (ANGLIA)

Region & Route:
Eastern: Anglia
| Eastern

The number of trains arriving on time¹ on Britain's railways reached a new record annual high² in the year to 30 May 2009 as 90.8% of services arrived punctually. The highest level of train punctuality since comparable records³ began almost 20 years ago (1992).

Today sees Network Rail publish its second monthly report on train performance, a regular four weekly round-up of how trains across all the franchises on Britain's railways are performing.

Period 2, May 3 to 30 2009, saw 93.4% (91.7% last year) of services across the country arrive on time with 16 of the 19 train operators seeing improvement compared to the same period last year.

The two main operators in East Anglia both saw punctuality improve, with National Express East Anglia jumping two full percentage points to 94.3% (92.3% last year) whilst c2c recorded one of the best months ever for any operator with 97% of trains arriving on time (96.7% last year). East Midlands Trains, which operates services from Norwich to Liverpool, saw the biggest rise of any train operator up 6.3% to 93.5% (87.2% last year).

Nine operators saw significant movement in their performance (over two percentage points):

  • ..............................P2 2009, P2 2008, % point change
  • East Midlands Trains - 93.5%, 87.2%, +6.3
  • First Great Western - 94.6%, 89.3%, +5.3
  • Virgin Trains - 84.6%, 80.8%, +3.8
  • National Express East Coast - 92.5%, 89.5%, +3
  • Northern Rail - 94.2%, 91.4%, +2.8
  • London Midland - 90.4%, 87.7%, +2.7
  • First Transpennine Express - 94.7%, 92.1%, +2.6
  • Arriva Trains Wales - 95.6%, 93%, +2.6
  • Southeastern - 92.9%, 90.4%, +2.5

Patrick Hallgate, Network Rail Anglia route director, said: "Passengers across the network are reaping the real benefits of a high performing, punctual railway. As we continue to invest in the railway in Anglia ahead of the Olympic Games in 2012 and beyond we will continue to work closely with the train operators to find ways to improve punctuality further still.”

This record performance was delivered with well over a million more trains per year running on the rail network today compared to the days of Railtrack and British Rail.

Only three operators saw performance dip, and all still delivered significantly above average performance. First Scotrail to 92.4% from 93.7%, First Capital Connect to 92.3% from 93% and Merseyrail to 96.9% from 97%.

Notes to editors

1) Arrived on time - the measure of train punctuality also know as PPM (public performance measure) means trains arriving at their destinations within 5 minutes for commuter services and within 10 for long distance services. This measure of punctuality is common and used throughout Europe 2) The previous record was set at the financial year end, 1 April 2008 to 31 March 2009, when 90.6% of trains arrived on time across Britain's as an average over the course of the 12 months 3) National train punctuality measured for all trains across every day did not start to be recorded until 1997. Before then Railtrack & BR before it measured most services - those during peak periods (and variations) and the percentages from 1992 to 1997 are extrapolations of the best figures available. No comparable numbers exist before this date 4) Network Rail and the train operators run more trains across Great Britain than are run in France and 60% more than operate in Italy. The UK's 24,000 trains per-day is also more than Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Portugal and Norway combined 5) While punctuality on Virgin services (300 trains per day [tpd], about 15% of total services on the route) saw a marked improvement compared to last year at 84.6%, it is still below expectations. The other main operators on the route (London Midland 400 tpd, Northern 400 tpd and Transpennine Express 250 tpd) saw performance levels above 90% 6) Network Rail is injecting £50m to improve train punctuality along the West Coast Main Line. The extra millions will be invested in more people, more equipment and the accelerated renewal of the less reliable pieces of equipment along the route. Some of the main actions include: • Dozens of specialist engineers and trouble-shooters will be deployed during the busiest times of day at around 20 key locations between London, Milton Keynes, Birmingham and Crewe • An entirely new maintenance organisation is being set-up to give more specific attention to the most heavily used part of the west coast, London to Rugby • The accelerated replacement of the most unreliable equipment including points, power and signalling cables, track and overhead line equipment • A crack-down on cable theft is underway with more patrols, installation of trembler alarms, locking down and burying cable and working with the police Crimestoppers to offer rewards of up to £1,000 • Closer management of all faults and incidents on the route to accelerate reaction times and reduce delays to trains including daily performance reviews with train operators

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
