A track renewal project will start in Wiltshire this weekend as part of Network Rail’s ongoing programme to upgrade and improve the country’s rail network.  Engineers will be working around the clock to replace rails, sleepers and ballast over several miles of track between Salisbury and Yeovil Junction. The engineering programme will require the closure of the line between Salisbury and Yeovil Junction on Saturday 2 October – Sunday 3 October and Saturday 9 October – Sunday 10 October. Network Rail Route Director, David Pape, said:   “This engineering work is part of our commitment to improve track quality in the area and to provide a better service to our customers and the passenger. “We will work with South West Trains to do all we can to ensure that disruption to passengers and people living nearby is kept to an minimum.” Train services between London Waterloo and Exeter St Davids will be diverted via Westbury and will not be calling at Tisbury, Gillingham, Templecombe and Sherborne.  Alternative road transport will be available from Salisbury to Gillingham and Yeovil Junction by South West Trains. -more Gillingham – 2 Passengers are advised to ring National Rail Enquiries on 08457 48 49 50 if they are planning to travel on this route.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
