Passengers in Merseyside are benefiting from a major investment to Bromborough station on the Wirral as the region’s railway network evolves for the future.

More than £1m has been invested by the Great North Rail Project to restore and upgrade the station’s footbridge.

The transformation was delivered in two phases, the first of which began in March 2019.

This involved structural repairs to the bridge to keep it safe and reliable for passengers.

The final phase of work involved replacing the roof, installing new windows, lighting, flooring and a fresh coat of paint.

Melinda Sallaway, scheme project manager for Network Rail, said: “We worked closely with our colleagues at Merseyrail to minimise disruption to passengers as much as possible while carrying out the refurbishments at Bromborough station”

“This much-needed Great North Rail Project work means the station will be a brighter and more pleasant space for passengers for years to come.”

Jane English, people director at Merseyrail, said: “We are pleased to have worked closely with our partners Network Rail to improve the facilities at Bromborough station for our passengers as part of the Great North Rail Project.

“Thank you to our passengers for your patience during these works to improve the station environment for a better overall experience.”

Cllr Liam Robinson, portfolio holder for transport & air quality at the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, said: “This is a great example of how we are improving the customer experience, giving people more reasons to leave the car at home. It’s been a really tough year for all of us but we are determined to press ahead with essential projects such as this one right across the city region as we focus on our recovery journey.

"Transport is an essential driver of economic growth and continuing to invest in our railway is just one of the ways we can build back better".

Meanwhile work to improve Bromborough station's car park* and upgrades to train power supplies** to allow for new trains to come onto the Merseyrail network continues.

Passengers are reminded to continue following government Covid safety advice when using public transport.

People can get more advice and plan their journeys at www.nationalrail.co.uk or with their train operator.

Notes to Editors

*Car park expansion

Work to extend the car park will see 50 more car park spaces and will include additional compliant disabled spaces, enhanced lighting, CCTV and fencing for security.

Funding has been secured through the STEP (Sustainable Transport Enhancement Programme).

**Powering the future

The power supply upgrade work is part of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s half a billion-pound new trains programme.

New equipment and upgraded cabling is being installed to boost the power supply to power the new trains.

The upgrades are due to be completed this year.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
