A brand-new footbridge is now helping to ease congestion at Thameslink’s busiest train station north of London, St Albans City.

Daisy Cooper MP and Council leader Chris White joined representatives from Network Rail as well as Thameslink’s Managing Director, Tom Moran at the station today (Friday 10 February) to see the new footbridge which opened to passengers on 31 January 2023.

Daisy Cooper MP commented: "It's great to finally see the second footbridge open. It will really improve passenger safety for St Albans commuters and for everyone who uses the City station."

Almost 4 million journeys are made to, from or through St Albans City station every year. The multi-million-pound investment will make it easier for passengers to switch platforms, especially during busy times.

Gary Walsh, East Midlands Route Director for Network Rail said: “At such a busy station, this brand-new footbridge will create much-needed space and help more passengers enjoy travelling by train.

“Our industry partners, passengers and stakeholders have been central to delivering this important project and I’m grateful for their support.”

Thameslink and Great Northern Managing Director Tom Moran said: “We’ve transformed St Albans station over the last few years to improve the experience for our passengers.

“We now have new retail stores, improved toilets, additional cycle facilities with increased security and a wider entrance to help passenger flows through the Ridgmont Road entrance.

“This second footbridge is yet another substantial improvement that will really help commuters by making it quicker and easier to get from one side of the station to the other – particularly from the central ‘island’ platform.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
