Network Rail is inviting residents in the Frome area to attend a drop-in session tomorrow (Tuesday 4 October) to find out more about the refurbishment of a railway bridge in the town, which takes place later this year alongside essential track maintenance.

The drop-in session will be held between 4pm and 7pm at The Cheese and Grain, Market Yard, Frome, which is fully accessible. Members of the public will be able to speak with the Network Rail project team, who can answer any questions they may have.

The work is due to take place this December, when workers from Network Rail will brave the winter weather to refurbish North Row railway bridge as millions across the nation are observing Christmas festivities.

Alongside the bridge refurbishment, engineers will also carry out track renewals in the area, ensuring that freight can continue to be moved safely and reliably by rail, reducing congestion on the roads as well as carbon emissions.

While the core works take place from Saturday 24 December 2022 to Saturday 7 January 2023, teams will be in the area from mid-October onwards to carry out preparatory work.

Jack Cleeves, Network Rail’s scheme project manager, said: “The work to refurbish North Row bridge and upgrade the track is essential to the continued safe and reliable movement of freight, allowing customers and consumers easy access to goods while reducing carbon emissions.

“Everyone is welcome to come along to our drop-in event; we’re looking forward to answering any questions and explaining the benefits of the project.

“I’d like to thank the local community in advance for their patience and understanding while we carry out this work.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
