Smoother journeys on the way as work progresses at Maidenhead station

Smoother journeys for passengers at Maidenhead station in Berkshire have moved a step closer as Network Rail improvement work progresses. 

A new stairwell has been successfully excavated which, together with a new lift, will reduce queuing and delays and ease congestion on some platforms. 

The upgrades are due to open this autumn and will help to make the station easier to use. 

Network Rail’s contractor, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, has dug the new stairwell from platforms two and three down to the existing subway. All the spoil that has been removed has been reused within the station, leaving no waste. 

Work has also begun to install the new lift, while passenger information screens, public address system and CCTV are also being improved. 

While work takes place, there continues to be no step-free access to platforms two and three. Step-free access is still available to platforms one, four and five.  

Passengers who require step-free access should follow this advice:  

Travelling from Maidenhead station  

  • There is no impact travelling east towards London  
  • To travel west towards Reading, first travel to Taplow, Burnham or Slough and change to a westbound service  
  • Consider starting your journey at Taplow, Burnham, Slough or Twyford  

Travelling to Maidenhead from the London direction  

  • Stay on the train beyond Maidenhead, change at Twyford or Reading and travel back to Maidenhead  

Step-free access to all platforms is available at Reading, Twyford, Taplow, Burnham and Slough and all tickets are accepted on both GWR and Elizabeth line trains while the work takes place.  

Additional staff are available at Maidenhead to offer support during the work.
