Scotland’s Railway appeals for former signallers to help keep vital services moving

Network Rail is appealing for former signallers and controllers who can help to keep Scotland’s Railway running during the COVID-19 lockdown.

The rail industry wants former signallers, train running and incident controllers and ECRO colleagues to return to the industry to boost numbers in these key posts.

Full refresher training will be provided and former colleagues will be able to help play a vital role in keeping the network open.

Scotland’s Railway is working around-the-clock to  keep NHS staff, other key workers and essential freight supplies on the move across the country.

All signal boxes and control centres are currently operating normally and the network is running well, but Network Rail wants to build a contingency pool of experienced people ready to step in if current staff have to self-isolate in the weeks ahead.

Ross Moran, head of operations for Network Rail Scotland Route, said: “Everyone in Scotland’s Railway is working hard to make sure we keep passenger services and freight trains carrying vital food and medical supplies on the move.

“We are appealing for signallers and controllers who’ve recently retired or moved on to other careers to come back and support the railway – and country – during the peak of the pandemic.

“These roles are vital to keep the railway open and we want to make sure we have as many staff as possible available during this crucial time.”
