Safety reminder as timetable change means Sunday trains through village

Walkers, cyclists, motorists and horse riders are advised of timetable changes affecting level crossings through a Lincolnshire village.
The railway line at Metheringham, on the line between Lincoln and Sleaford, currently has no timetabled trains running on Sundays.
But from Sunday 14 December – with the introduction of new timetables – this will change, with up to eight freight trains operating on Sundays.
All level crossing users are reminded to follow safety instruction signs, obey warning lights and alarms, never stop on crossings, and avoid distractions such as mobile phones or headphones.
There are level crossings of different types through Metheringham – with different instructions to follow.
In addition, Martin Road level crossing just south of the village is on a route popular with cyclists at weekends. Anyone crossing is instructed to use the phone at the crossing to get permission to cross from the operator because of the poor visibility in both directions.
Adam Warner, Network Rail level crossing manager, said:
“With the introduction of timetabled Sunday freight services through Metheringham, we’re asking everyone – whether walking, cycling, driving or riding – to take extra care.
“Please follow the signs, obey the warning lights and alarms, and never take risks. Even if you know the area well, it’s important to stay alert, and using the phone housed in the yellow cabinet at Martin Road is essential for your safety and the safety of others.”
The new East Coast Main Line timetable, being introduced on Sunday 14 December and bringing more frequent and faster services, means changes across the rail industry. Click here to read more.

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
