Reminder: Nunthorpe level crossing upgrade work begins this weekend
- Region & Route:
- Eastern
- | Eastern: North & East
Passengers are reminded that a full upgrade of Nunthorpe level crossing means buses replace trains between Middlesbrough and Whitby next week (23-27 February).
Network Rail will replace the life-expired crossing with a modern sliding barrier and improved operating system, with a new road layout which will be completely resurfaced.
The changes will provide rail passengers with more reliable journeys as well as giving road users a smoother ride over the crossing surface.
The work means there will be no road vehicle or pedestrian access over the crossing, on Marton Moor Road, from 19:00 on Sunday 22 February to 05:30 on Saturday 28 February. A diversionary route will be clearly signposted.
Shuttle buses will run every 20 minutes, with clearly signposted stops either side of the level crossing. The shuttle bus will stop at the Arriva 28 and 28A bus stops and will call at Nunthorpe Academy for passengers wishing to catch the rail replacement bus services.
Passengers using rail replacement services are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and only bring luggage they can carry comfortably. Buses will depart from the turning circle outside Nunthorpe Academy on Guisborough Road.
The work also means there will be no trains between Middlesbrough and Whitby from Monday 23 to Friday 27 February. Rail replacement buses will be in operation, calling at all stations.
Amelia Fordyce, Network Rail project manager, said:
“We’re fully renewing Nunthorpe level crossing to improve safety and reliability for everyone using the railway and the road. The existing crossing needs to be replaced due to the age and condition of the current equipment, and we’ve scheduled the work for half-term week to minimise disruption as much as we can.
“We appreciate there will be some disruption while the work takes place and thank the community for their patience and understanding.”

About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.
Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
