Rail engineers expect to complete repair works on rail bridge in Manea ahead of weekend services

Engineers are undertaking urgent repair work on a rail bridge in the Manea area between Ely and Peterborough. An area of deterioration was found on the rail bridge structure during a regular inspection. To protect the safety of those using the 170 rail services that cross the bridge daily , we, in cooperation with our train operator partners, decided not to run  services today between Ely and Peterborough.

Repairs have been progressing throughout the day and we expect the line to reopen for weekend services early Saturday morning.

Bus replacement services have been in place between Ely and Peterborough for passengers using Greater Anglia, East Midlands and Cross Country services to maintain connectivity across the affected area.  Anyone planning to travel should check National Rail Enquiries or with their train operator before setting off tomorrow.

The bridge is currently undergoing a programme of repairs to reverse years of weather related deterioration including the timbers under the track that need replacing. The repair programme has been progressing during major holiday periods when trains have not been running, but a recent inspection found that a part of the timber decking had deteriorated rapidly, which has led to the urgent works we have seen today.

Meliha Duymaz, Network Rail’s route managing director for Anglia, said; “Our engineers have worked quickly to repair the rail bridge at Manea to allow services to resume for the weekend, but I understand that this has affected travel plans for many people. I apologise to passengers affected today and reassure them that we’ll be working hard to investigate the cause and take measures to prevent further delays in the future.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
