Passengers thanked after May Bank Holiday upgrades completed

Network Rail and Abellio Greater Anglia today thanked passengers for their patience as vital upgrades were completed over the May Bank Holiday on the line between London and Norwich.

Engineers renewed overhead lines, installed new track and continued to upgrade the line in preparation for Crossrail.

Steve Cassidy, Network Rail area director, said: “We would like to thank passengers for their patience while we carried out these vital upgrades. We try our best to minimise the impact on passengers and do most of the work behind the scenes, but there are big pieces of work that can only be completed when the railway is clear of trains.

“We successfully used this time to continue to upgrade this busy main line and this work will help to provide passengers, who travel on this route every year with more reliable journeys.”

Andrew Goodrum, Customer Service Director, Abellio Greater Anglia said: "We're very grateful for the cooperation and patience of our customers over the Bank Holiday while Network Rail carried out works to upgrade the railway. These improvements will help in providing a more reliable service on the Great Eastern Main Line."

Network Rail is investing £170m on the Great Eastern Main Line, which runs from London Liverpool Street to Norwich, in 2015. In the Spring Bank Holiday later this month, work to upgrade the railway in the east of England will continue but is much less disruptive. There is no planned improvement work on Saturday May 23.

Passengers will be able to travel by train into Stratford (apart from Sunday morning until 10.40) on Sunday 24 and Monday 25 May but trains will not serve Liverpool Street on these days on the main line between London and Norwich. This is because of Crossrail upgrades being carried out at Pudding Mill Lane. Passengers should change at Stratford for travel to and from Liverpool Street via London Underground Central Line. For more information visitwww.abelliogreateranglia.co.uk

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
