Winter weather travel advice for rail passengers in Yorkshire and North East

Region & Route:
Eastern
| Eastern: North & East
| Eastern: East Coast

Rail passengers are being urged to plan ahead with their journeys following a yellow weather warning for snow and ice from the Met Office in Yorkshire and the North East.

Travel disruption is possible from this evening (Monday 18 November) and overnight into Tuesday morning, however the challenging conditions including snow, ice and freezing rain will last all week.

Network Rail’s teams are on standby to de-ice key junctions, deploy locomotives with mini snow ploughs where necessary, and carry out other proactive measures to keep services running.

Northern and LNER have made changes to their services already.

Passengers are being advised to check National Rail Enquiries before they travel or with their train operator.

Karen Duffy, operations director for Network Rail’s north and east route said: “The snow and ice predicted overnight may mean that some services will be disrupted.

“Our teams will be monitoring conditions and engineers are on standby ready to respond if necessary. We are urging all passengers to check their journeys before they set off for home this evening.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
