Passengers advised to check before they travel ahead of bank holiday station upgrade works at Ealing Broadway

Region & Route:
Wales & Western: Western
| Wales & Western
  • Network Rail is upgrading Ealing Broadway station over the early May bank holiday in preparation for the Elizabeth line
  • Demolition of Platform 2/3 stairway to make way for the foundations for new passenger footbridge and lifts
  • Road closure along The Broadway from 11pm on Friday 4 May to 5am on Tuesday 8 May. TfL buses on diversion
  • Community drop-in session on Monday 30 April from 4.30pm to 7pm.

Network Rail will be undertaking upgrade works at Ealing Broadway station over the bank holiday weekend.

Team Orange will be out in force from 5 to 7 May as they remove the stairway on Platform 2/3. This will enable Network Rail to continue work on the foundations for a new passenger footbridge and lifts that will connect the platforms to the new larger ticket hall once the major upgrade is complete.

A temporary staircase to the platform will be installed once the current permanent structure has been removed. This staged plan for Ealing Broadway enables the station to remain operational throughout the ongoing construction process, and reduces passenger disruption by making best use of bank holidays when up to 50% fewer passengers travel.

The upgrade work means there will be limited rail services from Ealing Broadway on Saturday 5 and Monday 7 May with no services on Sunday 6 May when the station will be closed although buses will replace trains.

To help complete the planned works over the bank holiday weekend a 500 tonne crane will be used and owing to the scale of the work temporary road closures will also be required. This includes the north-south part of The Broadway outside the entrance to Ealing Broadway station from 11pm on Friday 4 May to 5am on Tuesday 8 May. Pedestrian access to businesses and properties along The Broadway will be unaffected.

Network Rail will be holding a community drop-in session at the Crossrail Office on Haven Green, W5 2TN on Monday 30 April from 4.30pm to 7pm. Anyone attending will get the chance to speak to some of the team working on the station over the bank holiday weekend.

Once complete, the Elizabeth line will transform rail transport in London and the South East, increasing central London’s rail capacity by 10% and bringing an extra 1.5 million people to within 45 minutes of central London

Ben Wheeldon, Crossrail programme director for Network Rail, said: “This station upgrade forms a vital part of our upgrade programme for the Elizabeth line and will allow us to work on the foundations for a new footbridge and lifts that will improve access to the station and connectivity to a new larger ticket hall.

“The scale of the work is huge and we will work round the clock to ensure the work is completed on time as we continue to deliver our Railway Upgrade Plan.

“We thank everyone affected by the upgrade work for their patience and advise anyone travelling to or near the station to check before they travel.”

Vehicle diversion routes will be clearly signposted. TfL buses will be diverted down St Leonard’s Road, Gordon Road and Longfield Road. For more information visit tfl.gov.uk/modes/buses/

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
