Passengers travelling between Norwich and Ipswich are urged to check before they travel this evening after large trees fell on to the overhead wires at Tivetshall between Norwich and Diss, also damaging the structures that carry them.

Four structures were damaged and will need to be replaced along with the overhead wires, before the line can reopen. Network Rail engineers will carry out this work overnight and it is expected that services will resume tomorrow morning (Friday 19 January).

Passengers travelling between Norwich and London are advised to travel via Cambridge. Passengers travelling between Ipswich and Norwich are advised to visit the Greater Anglia website for the latest travel information at www.greateranglia.co.uk or www.nationalrail.co.uk

Meliha Duymaz, Network Rail's route managing director for Anglia, said: “Several trees have fallen onto the overhead wires between Norwich and Diss, causing significant damage, not only to the wires but to the structures that hold the wires. We are currently working to carry out repairs as quickly as possible. I urge passengers to check before they travel and thank them for their patience while we clear the line.”

Andrew  Goodrum, Customer Service Director for Greater Anglia, said: "Most lines have either got back to normal or will be reopening shortly, but we will not be able to run trains between Ipswich and Norwich for the rest of today or evening. We advise customers to check on the Greater Anglia website or app before they travel. We apologise to customers for any inconvenience they have suffered as a result of delays and cancellations today because of the storm and would encourage them to check if they're eligible for Delay Repay compensation https://www.greateranglia.co.uk/about-us/our-performance/delay-repay."

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
