Network Rail is holding a security awareness day at Bristol Temple Meads on Tuesday 27 February where passengers will be able to learn about how railway staff work with British Transport Police (BTP) and other partners to keep the travelling public safe.

Passengers will be able to complete a short survey on what makes them feel safe or unsafe when using the railway, chat with station staff and British Transport Police about good security practices, and take away some safety related goodies.

Bernadette Sachse, Network Rail’s station manager for Bristol Temple Meads, said: “We’re looking forward to meeting passengers on Tuesday and talking to them about the importance of railway security, including things like reporting any suspicious or unusual behaviour.

“There are two sessions on the day, one from 8am to 12pm and the second running from 3pm to 5pm. We’ll be based in the subway, near to the main staircase, and will have literature and some free goodies on hand for people to pick up and take away.

“These events are an excellent way of engaging with passengers to promote safety messages as well as support our partners at the BTP with their security campaigns, such as ‘See It, Say It, Sorted’. If you’re in the station on the day, do pop down to see us!”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
