Network Rail begins work on new accessible footbridge at Suggitt’s Lane

Work is underway on a project to build a new accessible footbridge over the railway at Suggitt’s Lane in Cleethorpes.

Plans for the new bridge - which will connect people in the seaside town with the beachfront - were approved, subject to conditions, by North East Lincolnshire Council on Thursday 17 June.

Network Rail teams have started building a site compound which will be used throughout the project. Over the next three weeks, work will take place to install fencing, move cabling and transport stone to the site.

Some of the trees close to the railway will also be removed, following full ecological surveys which have been carried out as part of an Environmental and Social Management Plan. Network Rail is looking at options to plant new ones nearby.

Network Rail has sent more information to people who live nearby and is working to keep disruption to a minimum.

Further work will be carried out over the next few months to build the footbridge which will have stepped and ramped access. The project is expected to be completed in December.

Matt Rice, Route Director for Network Rail’s North and East Route, said: “We know that people in Cleethorpes will be delighted to see work starting on this project to build an accessible footbridge over the railway at Suggitt’s Lane.

“Our teams continue to work closely with North East Lincolnshire Council and residents in Cleethorpes to deliver the bridge as quickly as possible.

“We want to thank people in the community for their patience as we worked to find the best option and we would like to apologise for any inconvenience whilst this vital work to install the bridge is carried out.”

Network Rail took the decision to close Suggitt’s Lane in April 2019 for safety reasons. Network Rail and North East Lincolnshire Council have worked closely together on plans for an alternative access over the railway.
