Network Rail begins vital improvements to Selby footbridge

Work gets underway next week on a project to improve Byram footbridge in Brotherton to make sure it remains fit for purpose for years to come.

From Monday 1 November, teams will carry out vital work to repair and strengthen the bridge. This will involve installing scaffolding around the structure, grit-blasting it to remove older layers of paint, then repairing the metalwork. The existing wooden deck will also be replaced with new anti-slip surfacing.

For this work to take place safely, a section of the footpath which runs over the bridge will be temporarily closed from Monday 1 November 2021 until Monday 31 January 2022.

During this time, a signposted diversion will be in place for people in the community. This work will not impact on train services.

Network Rail has sent more information to people who live nearby and is working to keep disruption to a minimum.

Matt Rice, Route Director for Network Rail’s North and East route, said: “This work is essential to make sure people in Brotherton can continue using the footbridge and safely cross over the railway.

“We’re working to minimise disruption for people in the community, but we can only complete the improvements safely when the footbridge is closed. The temporary closure until January means we can avoid multiple periods of disruption, and I’d like to apologise for any inconvenience it causes.”
