Network Rail begins improvement work at Leicestershire level crossing this month

Network Rail is carrying out work to improve Broome Lane level crossing in Charnwood to make sure it can continue to be used reliably for years to come.

Between Thursday 17 and Thursday 24 June, engineers will replace the level crossing barriers and equipment with new, modern versions. This will create a more resilient railway and mean that the crossing remains fit for purpose. 

The lights at the crossing will be upgraded and new reflective signs will be put in place, improving safety at the crossing. New road traffic lights are also being installed during this time.

For all of this work to take place safely, the section of Broome Lane at the crossing will be closed from 22:00 on Thursday 17 until 06:00 on 24 June.

Network Rail has worked closely with Leicestershire County Council to minimise disruption in the area as much as possible. A signposted diversion will be in place for drivers and there will be no access for pedestrians during this time.

The work will not impact on train services and Network Rail has sent letters with details of the work to people who live near the crossing.

Vinny Briggs, Route Level Crossing Manager for Network Rail, said: “This work will make sure Broome Lane level crossing remains safe and reliable for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians crossing the railway.  

“Upgrading the barriers and equipment at the crossing now will reduce the amount of maintenance required, meaning less disruption for passengers and for people in the community in future. We want to thank people in the area for their patience whilst these vital improvements are carried out.”
