Major renewal of level crossing to boost safety and reliability for passengers, pedestrians and motorists

A full renewal of Nunthorpe level crossing is set to enhance safety for pedestrians, motorists and rail passengers.

The upgrade, taking place from Sunday 22 February to Saturday 28 February, will see the life-expired crossing replaced by Network Rail. A new sliding barrier will be installed, with a modern operating system added and the road resurfaced with a new layout.

The changes will provide rail passengers with more reliable journeys as well as giving road users a smoother ride over the crossing surface.

The work means there will be no trains between Middlesbrough and Whitby from Monday 23 to Friday 27 February. Rail replacement buses will be in operation, calling at all stations.

There will be no road vehicle or pedestrian access over the crossing, on Marton Moor Road, from 19:00 on Sunday 22 February to 05:30 on Saturday 28 February. A diversionary route will be clearly signposted.

Network Rail has organised a free shuttlebus service to get pedestrians from one side of the crossing to the other, operating approximately every 15 minutes, for 24 hours a day during the road closure.

Amelia Fordyce, Network Rail project manager, said:

“We’re fully renewing Nunthorpe level crossing to improve safety and reliability for everyone using the railway and the road. The existing crossing needs to be replaced due to the age and condition of the current equipment, and we’ve scheduled the work for half-term week to minimise disruption as much as we can.

“We appreciate there will be some disruption while the work takes place and thank the community for their patience and understanding.”

• A community drop-in event will be held at Nunthorpe Academy, Middlesbrough, Guisborough Road, TS7 0LA, from 17:00 to 18:30 on Thursday 5 February for anyone wishing to know more about the project and alternative travel arrangements.
