Lincoln shoppers to get a smoother High Street this Christmas

This Christmas, shoppers in Lincoln will benefit from a smoother route across the city’s biggest level crossing. 

Work to upgrade the level crossing on Lincoln High Street will get underway on Christmas Eve and run right through the Christmas period, ready to reopen for pedestrians on Tuesday 27 December. 

Crucially, engineers will change the crossing’s structure so that the tracks are level with the road. This will make it easier for people with bikes, pushchairs or wheelchairs to go over the crossing smoothly. 

The £200,000 project will involve digging up the existing road through the level crossing and laying fresh tarmac and road markings.

The level crossing will be closed to both pedestrians and vehicles from 22:00 on Saturday 24 December until 07:00 Tuesday 27 December, with the area fenced off to protect the general public and railway staff.  

The footbridge and lift over the level crossing will remain fully open as does the alternative walking route via Brayford Wharf East. Businesses will be open as usual throughout the work. 

The work will not affect passengers, as no services operate on Christmas Day or Boxing Day.  

Gary Walsh, Network Rail’s East Midlands Route Director, said: “This project will make a huge difference to shoppers, businesses and the local community. Lincoln High Street is a busy thoroughfare, and the upgrade will make it easier for people with bikes, pushchairs and wheelchairs to use the crossing safely.  

“Our teams will be working over the Christmas period while no trains are running to deliver these benefits without impacting passengers. I’m really pleased that businesses on the high street and the accessible footbridge will all be open as usual so that people can still get to where they need to be.”
