Network Rail and local MP Don Foster today marked the start of works to reduce the stepping distance between Platform 2 at Freshford Station and the stopping trains. Andy Hancock, Network Rail’s General Manager for the West Country, said: “We are raising the surface of Platform 2 by approximately 300mm to make it easier for rail passengers to get on and off trains. “In addition to this, we are also installing new lighting to both platforms as well putting up a new waiting shelter on Platform 2 – a joint initiative with Wessex Trains.” Weather permitting, the work will be completed by the end of February.  The platforms will also remain operational at all times. Don Foster, Bath MP, said:  “I am quite simply delighted that Network Rail is undertaking this work.  The people of Freshford have looked forward to this day for so long. “If Britain is to have the safe, reliable and affordable public transport system that it deserves, then projects like this are a must. “This is a memorable day in Freshford’s history!” Alan Wilson, Managing Director for Wessex Trains, said: “We are delighted that this work is being undertaken and it will prove to be of great benefit to our passengers at Freshford”.

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
