Residents in Cornwall are invited to a series of drop-in events next week to learn more about Network Rail’s Cornwall Capacity Enabling Scheme, which will deliver more seats and more reliable journeys for rail passengers.

The Cornwall Capacity Enabling Scheme, which forms part of Network Rail’s Railway Upgrade Plan, will be delivered in two phases, with the first set to be completed by the end of 2018.

In total 21 additional signals will be installed to improve reliability, while six level crossings will be upgraded and fitted with Miniature Signal Lights (MSL), which allows the user to see a green or red light to indicate whether it is safe to cross.

These measures will improve safety at crossings which currently operate as ‘stop, look, listen’ and crossings which require permission from the signaller to use.

The work will also allow an additional train per hour in each direction between Plymouth and Penzance following the implementation of a new timetable in December 2018.

Residents have been invited to attend drop-in events next week to find out more about the work taking place and the 3benefits it will bring for rail passengers in the region.

These events will take place on:

Monday, 22 January, 4.30pm-7.30pm

Carne Brea Village Hall, Trevingey, TR15 3BJ

Wednesday, 24 January, 4.30pm–7.30pm

Treleigh Parochial Church Hall, TR16 4AY

Thursday, 25 January, 4.30pm-7.30pm

The Pattern Hall, Foundry Parc, Charlestown Road, St Austell PL25 3FW

Friday, 26 January, 4.30pm-7.30pm

Pengegon Institute Community Hall, Dolcoath, TR14 8RX

Huw Edwards, project director for Network Rail, said: “I’d encourage all local residents who would like to discuss this work to come along and talk to the project team to find out more about what it will entail and the benefits it will bring.

“The Cornwall Capacity Scheme, taking place as part of our Railway Upgrade Plan, will not only improve train service in the region with an additional train service between Plymouth and Penzance, but will also improve pedestrian safety at level crossings. We are proud to have the safest major railway in Europe and we are always striving to improve even further.”

“Anyone that is unable to attend these events but would like to find out more on the scheme can contact our community relations team at crwest@networkrail.co.uk or call our 24/7 helpline on: 03457 11 41 41.”

About Network Rail

We own, operate and develop Britain's railway infrastructure; that's 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We run 20 of the UK's largest stations while all the others, over 2,500, are run by the country's train operating companies.

Usually, there are almost five million journeys made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People depend on Britain's railway for their daily commute, to visit friends and loved ones and to get them home safe every day. Our role is to deliver a safe and reliable railway, so we carefully manage and deliver thousands of projects every year that form part of the multi-billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan, to grow and expand the nation's railway network to respond to the tremendous growth and demand the railway has experienced - a doubling of passenger journeys over the past 20 years.
