A platform for success in £3.3m Chesterfield station upgrade

Major steps have been achieved in Network Rail’s multi-million-pound project to strengthen platforms at Chesterfield station.

Forty-metre sections of platforms 1 and 2 have been reconstructed using glass-reinforced plastic panels, which are easier to install but just as durable as a traditional build.

This core work was carried out when trains were not running over Christmas, meaning no disruption for passengers – and the station will continue to remain open throughout the overall scheme.

The steel superstructure beneath the platform on Crow Lane has also been grit-blasted, repaired and repainted.

New fencing and lighting to improve security and safety for passengers will also have been installed by the time the project is expected to complete at the end of March 2026.

“Our teams worked incredibly hard across the Christmas period to deliver this important phase of the Chesterfield platform upgrades.

“Completing these works now helped us minimise disruption and has kept us on schedule to complete the overall project on time – delivering modern, resilient platform structures that will serve passengers for decades to come.”
